The sinking spots, each roughly four feet by three feet, were caused by water infiltration into the base layer, which reduced its load-bearing capacity and led to settling. Freezing and thawing cycles exacerbated the issue by lifting and dropping the saturated material underneath. Simply overlaying new asphalt over these areas would have hidden the problem without fixing the root cause, likely leading to recurrence.
To ensure a durable repair, Young's saw-cut and removed the damaged asphalt at both locations and paved the repaired areas with three inches of new asphalt before applying the overlay to the rest of the lot. This approach addressed the underlying issue and provided a stable foundation for the new surface.
The project also included transitional milling, which grinds down the existing pavement where the new asphalt meets it, ensuring a smooth tie-in and proper elevation without a raised lip. The remaining lot received a full overlay process: cleaning and preparation, transitional milling at lock-in points, a tack coat, a base layer of asphalt, and a two-inch wearing course. The wearing course is the top layer exposed to traffic, weather, and plowing, and it sits on the base layer, both laid together as part of the same paving operation.
