The 2026 Duisburg China Festival commenced on Friday afternoon in Duisburg, Germany, featuring cultural booths, interactive zones, and performances from Chinese and German cities. The three-day event aims to strengthen bilateral ties, with Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei Province, playing a prominent role.
On Friday evening, nearly 40 artists from Wuhan's top performing arts troupes delivered the festival's opening gala, presenting over a dozen programs that included Peking opera, Hanju opera, Chuju opera, acrobatics, and ethnic song and dance. The performance was met with appreciation from attendees, including Duisburg Mayor Soeren Link, who described the gala as "unforgettable for its standard, quality, richness, and the many different facets it presented."
The festival serves as a "vivid expression of exchange between China and Germany," allowing Germans to experience and understand China up close, said Chang Haitao, acting consul general of the Chinese Consulate General in Dusseldorf. This sentiment was echoed by Markus Teuber, commissioner for China affairs at the Mayor's Office of Duisburg, who noted that the performances offered German audiences an excellent window into Chinese culture. He expressed hope for continued cultural exchange between the two cities.
Wuhan and Duisburg have been sister cities since 1982, marking the first such partnership between Germany and China. Over the decades, they have maintained close people-to-people and economic exchanges. Mayor Link emphasized Duisburg's dedication to its sister-city relationship with Wuhan and its desire to strengthen German-Chinese friendship. "Duisburg attaches great importance to its sister-city relationship with Wuhan and hopes to continue strengthening German-Chinese friendship as well as exchange and dialogue between the two sides," he said.
For Yang Jing, deputy director of the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Wuhan's participation at the festival "marks an important step in Wuhan culture's global outreach." The city's involvement highlights its cultural richness and its role in promoting international cultural dialogue.
