As National Homeless Animals Day approaches, WalletHub released its 2025 report on the most pet-friendly cities in the United States, evaluating the 100 largest cities across 23 metrics. With over 94 million pet-owning households projected to spend $157 billion this year, the study highlights where pets can enjoy a high quality of life without excessive costs.
Scottsdale, Arizona, tops the list as the most pet-friendly city, followed by Tampa, Florida, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Las Vegas, Portland, St. Louis, Orlando, Birmingham, Lexington-Fayette, and Austin round out the top ten. Conversely, Honolulu ranks as the least pet-friendly, with Boston, Stockton, Milwaukee, and Fresno also near the bottom.
The study considered factors such as minimum pet-care provider rate per visit, pet businesses per capita, and walkability. Key findings include Corpus Christi, Texas, having the lowest average veterinary care costs (annual exam), 2.3 times lower than Washington, D.C., the highest. Fort Wayne, Indiana, offers the lowest monthly dog-insurance premium, 3.3 times lower than Los Angeles and Irvine. Scottsdale boasts the most pet businesses per square root of population, 8.2 times more than Newark, New Jersey.
