The Better World Regulatory Coalition Inc. (BWRCI) announced the formation of the Vertical Stack Coalition, a standards-based framework designed to deliver near-zero emissions, utility-scale energy storage within urban environments. The initiative addresses the growing gap between surging electricity demand from AI, data centers, and reshored manufacturing, and the limitations of horizontal energy expansion constrained by saturated transmission corridors and lengthy permitting timelines.

Vertical Stack rethinks energy infrastructure by building upward inside urban-compatible structural envelopes, akin to how skyscrapers densified cities. Each installation delivers multi-gigawatt-hour daily output with utility-scale dispatch characteristics, modular replication, and a footprint compatible with conventional high-rise limits. The technology utilizes commercial molten salt batteries, chosen for their near-zero operational emissions and life-cycle global warming potential as low as 0.0306 kg CO2 eq/kWh, significantly lower than lithium-ion alternatives. These batteries avoid lithium-style thermal runaway, flammable solvent cascades, and oxygen-fed combustion events, operating within contained thermal systems.

The chemistry is fully domestic-sourceable, relying on widely available industrial materials rather than concentrated global supply chains. This enables domestic manufacturing, reduces geopolitical exposure, and aligns with U.S. industrial reshoring efforts. The architecture is designed for institutional-grade deployment, with standardized structural envelopes, module integration, and dispatch logic. Construction timelines are projected to be 80–90% faster than traditional carbon steel or concrete versions because fabrication and site work occur simultaneously.

Vertical Stack integrates with solar generation by capturing midday oversupply and dispatching it during evening demand, reducing curtailment and enabling higher solar penetration without new land expansion. It is also electrically compatible with modular nuclear generation, allowing load-matched pairing with a single reactor to improve economics and stability. With appropriate inverter and switching design, installations can support islanded operation, controlled ramp sequencing, and microgrid restoration, providing urban BlackStart capability for grid resilience.

The platform enables various ownership models, including municipal, community, utility, corporate microgrid, defense installation, and industrial campus ownership. This transforms backup power into localized energy authority. The coalition is engaging municipal utilities, independent power producers, modular nuclear developers, data center operators, industrial campus planners, defense infrastructure stakeholders, and institutional capital partners. Early adopting cities will control dispatch capacity within their own footprint.
