The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is calling on supporters to embrace the spirit of giving during the summer months through its 'Be a Summer Santa' initiative. While the organization is best known for its Christmas toy drives, it operates year-round to deliver hope and comfort to children facing financial hardship. July marks an ideal time to contribute, as summer can be a period when resources for low-income families are scarce.
According to the foundation, summer distributions help bridge what is known as the 'summer gap'—a time when children from disadvantaged backgrounds often lack access to enrichment activities and new items. A recent event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, organized in partnership with Storehouse of Community Resources and Good360, demonstrated the impact of these efforts. At the event, Toys for Tots provided two brand-new toys to each of 1,600 children, many of whom had not received any new toys during the summer.
One mother of three expressed her gratitude, noting that her children had been asking for activities all summer, but she struggled to afford them. Upon learning that each child could choose two toys, she became emotional, stating, 'I didn’t think they were going to get anything new this summer. This means more than you know.' Her daughter held onto her new game and doll for the rest of the evening, illustrating the profound effect such gestures can have.
Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, emphasized that these distributions are not about recreating Christmas but about extending its meaning. 'Being a Summer Santa means creating moments of happiness during times of uncertainty, strengthening communities, and reminding families they are not alone,' Laster said.
