The Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program is addressing a critical barrier to academic success for millions of children: the lack of access to books. Through its initiative, Operation Turn the Page, the program aims to equip underserved students with the resources they need to return to school ready to learn. The initiative is grounded in the belief that providing a book can unlock a child's future, said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, U.S. Marines (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “A single book may seem like a small gift, but for a child impacted by summer learning loss, it can open the door to possibilities they never knew existed,” Laster stated.
Since 2008, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program has distributed more than 63 million books and educational resources to children in need. Despite these efforts, the demand remains high. In low-income communities, there can be as few as one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. This scarcity contributes to summer learning loss, where students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, lose academic skills during the break. Studies show that this can set them back significantly when the new school year begins.
Operation Turn the Page focuses on bridging this gap by providing books during the summer months. The impact is tangible, as evidenced by testimonials from educators. A teacher from Freedom Trail Elementary noted, “For many of our students, receiving these books means more than just reading—it's the beginning of their first home library and a lifelong love of learning.” At United Elementary, the distribution of over 400 books created a ripple effect, with staff observing “excitement, pride, and a growing love of reading both in school and at home.” Similarly, at Entheos Academy, a student's reaction to finding a baseball book underscored the power of choice: “One student's face lit up with pure wonder when she found a book about baseball—proof that the right book can spark a lifelong love of reading.”
The initiative not only provides books but also fosters confidence and engagement. When children have access to reading materials over the summer, they return to school more prepared and enthusiastic about learning. This is crucial for academic achievement and long-term success.
