Randy C. Earll, a veteran actor and performer with over 50 years in community theater, has released his debut book titled Garage People and Other Things I Don't Understand. The collection of 22 short essays humorously examines the oddities of modern life, from neighbors sitting in garages watching traffic to the puzzling prevalence of .99 pricing. Published by Authors Arcade, the book blends lighthearted observations with pointed social commentary.
Earll draws on his experiences living in a Florida neighborhood, where he questions why residents sit in vinyl recliners in 90-degree heat to watch cars drive by. Other topics include the mysteries of burgundy cars losing hubcaps, the logic behind presidential campaign spending while children go hungry, and the contradictions of politicians who cut school budgets despite declaring education a priority. The book's tone shifts seamlessly between absurd and serious, with chapters covering everything from Botox injections to the recruitment practices of faiths with limited heaven capacities.
The author's background includes appearances alongside Burt Reynolds in the film Hollow Creek, work as a stadium announcer for a Major/Minor League Baseball team, and a career as a radio personality. He also wrote a musical titled COMMUNITY The Musical and recorded a Gospel CD. Earll's writing style reflects his performance background, offering natural timing and genuine warmth.
A particularly poignant final chapter recounts overhearing a hotel clerk deny a discounted room to a uniformed soldier home on leave, despite empty rooms available. This moment underscores the book's underlying heart beneath its humor. As Earll writes in the introduction, 'If you're anything like me, there are many things in this world you don't understand.'
The book is available through Authors Arcade and other retailers. For more about the author, visit his Facebook page at Randy C. Earll Author or his Instagram at @randy.c.earll.author.
