Quantum BioPharma (NASDAQ: QNTM) (CSE: QNTM) announced that patient enrollment in its collaborative multiple sclerosis imaging study with Massachusetts General Hospital has reached the halfway mark, with preliminary imaging data showing encouraging signal in acute MS lesions and potential sensitivity to gray matter lesions. The study is evaluating a novel PET imaging technique using the [¹⁸F]3F4AP tracer to directly assess demyelination, which the company believes could enhance development of MS therapies including its investigational candidate Lucid-MS, for which an IND submission for a Phase 2 trial was submitted to the FDA in March 2026.
The midpoint milestone represents a significant step in validating a non-invasive imaging biomarker for multiple sclerosis. Current diagnostic methods often rely on MRI, which may not fully capture the extent of demyelination, particularly in gray matter lesions that are increasingly recognized as critical in disease progression. The [¹⁸F]3F4AP tracer targets potassium channels exposed during demyelination, offering a more direct measure of myelin loss. If successful, this imaging technique could provide a more accurate tool for monitoring disease activity and assessing therapeutic response in clinical trials.
For Quantum BioPharma, the implications are twofold. First, positive imaging data could de-risk the development of Lucid-MS, a patented new chemical entity shown in preclinical models to prevent and reverse myelin degradation. The company submitted an IND for a Phase 2 trial of Lucid-MS in March 2026. Second, the imaging technique itself could become a valuable companion diagnostic, potentially accelerating regulatory approval and market adoption of MS therapies.
Massachusetts General Hospital, a leading research institution, brings significant expertise in neuroimaging. The collaboration underscores the trend toward precision medicine in neurology, where biomarkers are used to stratify patients and monitor treatment effects. The preliminary data showing sensitivity to gray matter lesions is particularly noteworthy, as gray matter damage correlates strongly with disability progression in MS.
Quantum BioPharma also has a diverse pipeline beyond MS. Through its subsidiary Lucid Psycheceuticals Inc., it focuses on neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders. The company also holds a 19.84% stake in Unbuzzd Wellness Inc., which markets UNBUZZD, a product for alcohol misuse. Quantum retains a royalty of 7% on UNBUZZD sales up to $250 million, then 3% in perpetuity, while keeping full rights for pharmaceutical uses.
The midpoint enrollment in this imaging study is a critical step forward. If the [¹⁸F]3F4AP tracer proves effective, it could transform how MS is diagnosed and treated, providing a clearer picture of disease activity and enabling more targeted therapies. For Quantum, success could mean a faster path to market for Lucid-MS and a potential new revenue stream from the imaging technology.
