Parker Publishers has announced the upcoming release of Between Sirens and Silence: Life After Policing, a memoir by retired Sacramento Police Department officer Jason Palmi. Scheduled for publication on November 4, 2026, the book chronicles Palmi's 31-year career in law enforcement and his subsequent journey of personal transformation. It will be available in eBook, paperback, and hardback formats through Amazon and Ingram Spark.
The memoir draws on cases and assignments from Palmi's time in patrol, the academy, and the field, offering a candid look at the daily realities of police work and the cumulative toll it can take. The narrative follows a trajectory familiar to many in the profession: an initial sense of calling, a prolonged period of burnout and disengagement, and eventually a return to purpose. The title reflects the silence that follows not only retirement but also each shift, when officers return home and try to set aside the day's events.
Palmi's book is aimed at readers who are navigating similar experiences—officers who have lost their footing in the job, those contemplating a career in law enforcement, and the families who bear much of the emotional weight. Throughout, he emphasizes the crucial role of a support system and, in his case, faith, in helping him through the difficult years. He writes: "I wrote this book with the hope of helping those who wake up dreading a job they once loved and feeling trapped, believing they have no alternative but to be miserable. Drawing from my personal experiences with burnout, self-doubt, and career dissatisfaction, I share an honest story of transformation, showing how self-reflection, personal growth, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can lead to renewed purpose and fulfilment, both on the job and in retirement."
Palmi served with the Sacramento Police Department from 1986 to 2017, working in patrol, as an academy instructor, and at the department's Emergency Vehicle Operations Center. After retiring, he moved to Montgomery, Texas, completed a master's degree at Sam Houston State University, and began teaching Criminal Justice, first at Sacramento City College and later at Sam Houston State, where he continues to teach. His academic background and field experience lend credibility to the book's insights.
The significance of this memoir extends beyond personal narrative. In an era of heightened scrutiny of law enforcement and concerns about officer wellness, Palmi's story provides a rare, honest account of the psychological challenges officers face and the pathways to recovery. It challenges the stigma surrounding mental health in policing and encourages a dialogue about the need for systemic support. By detailing his own struggles and eventual renewal, Palmi offers a message of hope and practical guidance for those who feel trapped in their careers or disillusioned with their profession.
For officers contemplating retirement or for those currently struggling with burnout, the book serves as a roadmap to finding purpose beyond the badge. For families, it sheds light on the invisible burdens officers carry home. And for aspiring officers, it provides a realistic perspective on both the rewards and the costs of a career in law enforcement. As Palmi notes, success is often shaped not by circumstances alone, but by mindset, choices, and the courage to change.
The book's release is timely, as police agencies across the country grapple with recruitment and retention challenges. By openly discussing his journey, Palmi hopes to inspire others to seek help, embrace change, and recognize that there is life after policing.
