BELLINGHAM, WA — The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI) announced that a selection from founder Gloria DeGaetano's book Screen Smarts has been reprinted in a Japanese textbook published by Kyogakusha. The excerpt, titled "As Children Grow: Screen Influence," will appear in two editions used by Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) — one current through 2027 and the other for the 2027-2029 term. The inclusion aims to help high school students understand the text's meaning and complex grammatical points with a simple Japanese translation.
Kwansei Gakuin University, a prestigious institution located in Hyogo Prefecture with campuses in Nishinomiya, Sanda, Osaka, and Tokyo, partners with 320 universities and 60 organizations globally. DeGaetano expressed her honor at being contacted by KGU, noting their meticulous attention to detail, which made the reprint process seamless. The 2027-2029 edition is published in affiliation with the Schools of Theology, Sociology, Economics, International Studies, and Education.
DeGaetano emphasized the enduring relevance of the selected content: "Although Screen Smarts is an older book, the research still stands today. The more children stare into a two-dimensional flat surface, the less their brain develops optimally. Tech cannot do what sensory and lived experiences do to help little humans flourish." This message has been central to her work for over 30 years and is integral to the parent coach training program she developed at PCI.
