The Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III, and Her Majesty Olori Atuwatse III, Mama Iwere, have launched a cultural initiative called 'Iam Itsekiri' to connect Itsekiri people across the globe. The movement, authorized by the Palace of the Warri Kingdom, combines a media-driven cultural campaign with a dedicated mobile application to serve as a digital gathering place for the community.
The initiative is built on the belief that the name Itsekiri means 'blessing surrounds us.' Their Majesties aim to strengthen identity, pride, and unity among Itsekiris while extending a sense of belonging to friends and allies of the kingdom. The movement welcomes three groups: those born Itsekiri, those who became part of the family through marriage, and friends who identify with Itsekiri values. This approach broadens participation while preserving cultural heritage.
The Iam Itsekiri app functions as a digital village, offering updates from the Palace, connecting users worldwide, and promoting language, traditions, customs, and cuisine. It will be available soon on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. The movement is amplified through the #IAmItsekiri Challenge, encouraging participants to share personal stories and experiences reflecting Itsekiri identity.
His Majesty emphasized that this initiative is 'not nostalgia, but strategy,' aimed at preserving heritage and projecting the blessings and values of the Itsekiri people globally. The move is significant as it harnesses digital technology to unite a diaspora community, ensuring cultural continuity in an increasingly connected world. By creating a virtual gathering place, the initiative addresses the challenges of geographical dispersion and aims to foster a strong, unified identity that can influence and inspire future generations.
