Mission Driven Bank Fund and National Bankers Association Discuss Strategies to Empower Community Banks

The Mission Driven Bank Fund (MDBF) recently participated in a webinar hosted by the National Bankers Association to explore how strategic capital, technical services, and impact measurement can empower community-focused financial institutions. The discussion, which featured insights from MDBF leaders and a portfolio bank executive, underscored the critical role these resources play in helping banks strengthen their operations and expand their reach.

Nicole Elam, President and CEO of the National Bankers Association, emphasized the importance of capital access for mission-driven banks. "The Mission Driven Bank Fund has been a valued partner to the National Bankers Association for the past several years, and we appreciate their continued commitment to our members and the broader mission-driven banking sector," she said. "Access to capital is critical to helping these institutions grow and deepen their impact, and we were pleased to create an opportunity for our members to learn more about the Fund and the resources available to support their growth."

During the webinar, MDBF’s Portfolio Manager Paul Welch and Senior Officer for Technical Services and Impact Measurement and Management Mayowa Sanusi outlined the Fund's comprehensive approach. By combining flexible capital with technical assistance and robust impact measurement, MDBF aims to help institutions strengthen their balance sheets, pursue growth opportunities, and foster economic development in underserved communities. This holistic strategy was exemplified by Anchor Bank, which shared its experience as a portfolio company. Nelson Hinojosa, President and CEO of Anchor Bank, described how MDBF's investment, delivered in two rounds, supported the bank's growth and enhanced its capital position. "The Mission Driven Bank Fund provides more than capital," Hinojosa noted. "It provides strategic partnership, credibility and ongoing support that helps us continue pursuing our mission and growth objectives."

The webinar also featured a market update from Matt Shields, Head of Financial Institutions Group Markets at Performance Trust Capital Partners, LLC. Shields highlighted improving conditions in bank capital markets and the growing availability of capital solutions for strategic growth and balance sheet management. He praised MDBF's dedication to minority depository institutions (MDIs) and community development financial institutions (CDFIs), stating, "I continue to commend the Mission Driven Bank Fund. There's no one as focused on serving and investing in MDIs and CDFIs across the country as the Mission Driven Bank Fund."

The collaboration between MDBF and the National Bankers Association reflects a broader trend of increasing support for community-focused banks, which are vital to providing credit and financial services to low- and moderate-income and other underserved communities. As these institutions face evolving challenges, access to strategic capital and technical expertise becomes paramount. The webinar served as a platform to share best practices and demonstrate how partnerships can drive meaningful change.

Paul Welch expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership, saying, "We appreciate ongoing National Bankers Association support and collaboration to advance the missions of both the banks and our fund." The event underscored the importance of such alliances in fostering a more inclusive and resilient banking system, ultimately contributing to wealth creation in the communities these banks serve.
