The Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards (MHIMA) have officially launched the 2026-2027 competition season, inviting youth and emerging composers, songwriters, arrangers, and orchestrators from around the world to participate. Inspired by the legacy of legendary composer Marvin Hamlisch, the Awards provide an international platform for original work, professional recognition, and industry engagement.
The competition introduces updated categories, expanded participation opportunities, and a renewed commitment to fostering the next generation of musical storytellers. Winners will be announced at the late fall 2027 Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards Presentation at the historic Avon Theatre Film Center in Stamford, Connecticut.

Gistelinck, Co-Founders of MHIMA. “These Awards celebrate that spirit by connecting emerging creators with mentors, industry professionals, and opportunities that can help launch and sustain meaningful careers in music.”
The 2026-2027 competition features Youth and Emerging Divisions in four categories: Film/Media Scoring, Classical Composition, Musical Theatre Composition, and Arranging & Orchestration. In Film/Media Scoring, participants receive a short film and create an original score. Classical Composition requires a response to a creative prompt. Musical Theatre Composition involves creating an original piece with music and lyrics. The newly expanded Arranging & Orchestration category invites participants to create works inspired by material connected to Marvin Hamlisch’s musical legacy.
The competition is open to entrants from all countries, divided into Youth Division (under 18) and Emerging Division (18 or older) who do not yet earn the majority of their income through composing. All submitted works must be original; the use of generative artificial intelligence, stock music, or pre-recorded compositions is strictly prohibited.
All nominees will be invited to an exclusive Professional Development and Networking Day in New York City, featuring discussions, mentorship, and networking with leading music industry executives. Submissions undergo anonymous evaluation by professional judges based on musical literacy, creativity, technological proficiency, narrative connection, and artistic excellence. Up to five nominees per category advance to a Distinguished Jury for final selection.
Each winner receives an official MHIMA award, while nominees receive commemorative plaques. Prize packages may be awarded through sponsors, and selected winning works may be considered for publication by Concord, one of the world’s leading music publishing organizations. Publication opportunities are subject to Concord’s independent review.
Marvin Hamlisch, a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, Academy Awards, Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, and Golden Globes, created beloved music across film, theatre, television, and popular culture. The Awards honor his legacy by encouraging excellence and innovation in music.
