In an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and redefining work, top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella emphasizes that people remain the driving force behind success. In a recent newsletter, Romanella challenges the pervasive narrative that AI will replace humans, arguing instead that technology changes work but leadership must lift people.
"AI can process information at unimaginable speed. AI can analyze patterns we would never see. AI can optimize tasks, automate workflows, and accelerate decisions. But AI cannot inspire belief. AI cannot build trust. AI cannot ignite passion. AI cannot create the emotional connection that moves people to act. Romanella, who spent nearly 40 years at UPS and later led The UPS Store, draws on his experience to illustrate that leadership decisions often rely on human judgment rather than data. He recounts being selected to manage the integration of Mailboxes Etc. into UPS despite lacking franchise experience, because his CEO and COO used what he calls "AIAI—Am I All In?" They saw his commitment and ownership mindset, something no algorithm could capture.
"The data would have said you need someone with franchise experience, someone who understands marketing, someone with entrepreneurial credentials—and probably a few other boxes I didn't check. But the data my CEO and COO used wasn't a spreadsheet. It wasn't an algorithm. It wasn't a model. It was AIAI. Am I All In?" Romanella said.
Romanella warns that the danger of AI is not replacement but the erosion of human self-worth. "A generation entering the workforce is stuck between what AI is and what AI isn't. They are waiting for AI to define them, instead of realizing they are still the architects of their own future. This paralysis is destructive," he wrote.
He cites the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's "Miracle on Ice" as proof that leadership transcends data. "AI could have analyzed the Soviet team's strengths, predicted their strategies, and calculated the odds. But AI could not have done what Herb Brooks did: build belief in a group of young men who had no business winning that game on paper," Romanella said.
