Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) announced today that Nancy Willis, who has served as Interim President since March 2026, has been appointed President and Executive Director. Willis, who joined HSSV in 2023, has held several key leadership roles during her tenure, including overseeing marketing and leading the planning and execution of The Fur Ball fundraising gala. Most recently, she guided the organization's response and rebuilding efforts following the December 2024 fire at its Milpitas Animal Community Center.
The appointment marks a critical juncture for HSSV as it moves into a new phase of rebuilding and growth. Peter Detkin, Chair of the HSSV Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of continuity and leadership during this period. "Nancy has shown the judgment, resilience and collaborative leadership HSSV needs," Detkin said. "She understands our organization, and the community we serve, and she has helped guide HSSV through one of the most challenging periods in its history. She is well positioned to lead the organization through its next phase of rebuilding and growth."
Willis brings a diverse background to the role, having worked in animal welfare since 2015 as Director of Development and Marketing at Maui Humane Society before joining HSSV. Prior to her nonprofit career, she spent over 20 years in professional sports, including 15 years with Major League Baseball. Her experience spans leadership, marketing, fundraising, and event planning, skills she has leveraged to bring teams together around a shared purpose.
In her new role, Willis will guide HSSV through its rebuilding efforts while strengthening programs, operations, and the organization's long-term ability to serve pets and people throughout the Bay Area. "I am deeply honored to lead Humane Society Silicon Valley and grateful for the trust the Board has placed in me," said Willis. "Over the past three years, I have seen firsthand the passion and dedication of the people who make HSSV what it is. We have an opportunity to build on that strength, deepen our impact and shape a future that reflects the full potential of this organization."
The appointment comes as HSSV, an independent, privately funded nonprofit, continues to recover from the fire that significantly damaged its Milpitas facility. The organization has been providing adoptions, veterinary care, and community programs, and with Willis at the helm, it aims to expand its regional rescue partnerships and resources that help families remain together. The leadership transition signals a commitment to stability and forward momentum, ensuring HSSV can continue its mission of saving lives and creating a better future for pets and their people.
