Dave Merrion, a resident at Fox Run, an Erickson Senior Living community in Novi, Mich., was awarded the John Johnson Medal for Outstanding Research in Diesel Engines by the Society of Automotive Engineers International this past spring. The ceremony took place at the Weston Book Cadillac Detroit Hotel in Detroit, Mich., recognizing Merrion's 50-year career dedicated to reducing diesel smoke and improving engine efficiency.
Merrion's work focused on creating cleaner emissions, improving fuel economy, and increasing the lifespan of diesel engines. His efforts led to a 99.9% reduction in exhaust emissions over five decades, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability. 'My certificate says that I got this conferred upon me for leadership in diesel engine research, innovation, and productions implementation of advanced commercial diesel engines with high reliability, fuel efficiency, and low emission technology,' Merrion noted.
His career began at the General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) in Flint, Mich., where he participated in a co-op program sponsored by the Detroit Diesel Engine Division of General Motors. He later earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializing in combustion and emissions.
At Detroit Diesel, Merrion focused on fuel economy and engine durability before emissions regulations added new challenges. 'When emissions came along, it added one more ingredient to my job requirements. But my specialty at MIT was in combustion, and if you're an expert in combustion, you're an expert in emissions,' he explained. The industry collaborated on measurement techniques, achieving near-zero emissions in modern diesel trucks, which can now travel a million miles before overhaul.
After retiring, Merrion ran Merrion Expert Consulting, working with Daimler Trucks North America until 2024. He and his late wife Jean chose Fox Run for its location and large campus offering diverse amenities. Now, Merrion leads euchre and bocce clubs, participates in genealogy, history, and astronomy clubs, and serves on the political awareness committee. He enjoys dinner at on-campus restaurants and weekly date nights with friend Carolann Boos. 'We all have fun! It's very social here,' Merrion said, crediting Fox Run's worry-free lifestyle for enabling his active retirement.
