Round Rock, TX — A Central Texas veteran named Rico received a life-changing gift this holiday season: a brand-new roof, fully donated by Family Friend Roofing and Construction. The Round Rock-based company surprised Rico with the news on November 18, weeks after he had received a power wheelchair through community partner ShareTheWill Foundation.
“When we launched, we knew giving back would be a pillar of our company,” said Lindsay Shapee, co-owner of Family Friend Roofing and Construction. “It’s who we are.”
The initiative was inspired by a simple morning call during which co-owner Josh Bovino proposed donating a roof to a veteran for Christmas. The team then reached out to Matt Maples of USA Cares, a nonprofit serving post-9/11 veterans, and collaborated with Will Williams and the ShareTheWill Foundation. Together, they identified Rico as the recipient.
Family Friend Roofing coordinated a surprise reveal at Café Java, where community members, including Santa Claus, gathered to celebrate. “Watching our partners connect with Rico, hear his story, and truly understand his journey changed us,” Shapee said.
The company, which serves Central Texas and Dallas, specializes in residential roof repair, replacement, storm restoration, and insurance claim assistance. But leadership emphasizes that community impact is equally foundational. Shapee is active with the Five Point Board of Realtors, and the company engages with the Round Rock Chamber, strengthening ties with local families and businesses.
“Real change happens when people connect beyond the surface,” Shapee added. “Telling stories, sharing time, and building relationships, that’s what brings a team closer.”
Family Friend Roofing plans to accept nominations for future veteran roof donations as the company grows, aiming to make the initiative a lasting holiday tradition. The first roof marks the beginning of a sustained giving program across the regions they serve.
