As government representatives convened in Geneva for the United Nations’ first discussions on global AI governance, environmental advocates raised concerns that a critical issue has received little attention: the impact of artificial intelligence on biodiversity and ecosystems.
The UN talks, aimed at establishing international norms and frameworks for AI development and deployment, have focused on issues such as safety, ethics, and human rights. However, campaigners argue that the environmental consequences of AI, including its carbon footprint, resource consumption, and effects on natural habitats, are being sidelined.
“AI systems require vast amounts of energy and data, which can lead to increased carbon emissions and strain on natural resources,” said a spokesperson for the environmental group. “Moreover, the deployment of AI in sectors like agriculture, forestry, and mining can accelerate habitat destruction and species loss if not carefully managed.”
The advocates are calling for a more holistic approach to AI governance that includes environmental sustainability as a core principle. They emphasize that the same technology that could help monitor and protect ecosystems could also cause unintended harm if its risks to nature are not addressed.
The discussions in Geneva come amid growing recognition of the need for global coordination on AI. Companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are exploring how quantum computing can help mitigate some of these risks by optimizing energy usage and enabling more efficient resource management. However, campaigners warn that such technological solutions should not overshadow the need for regulatory safeguards.
“We need to ensure that AI development does not come at the expense of the planet,” the spokesperson added. “The UN has a responsibility to integrate environmental considerations into its AI governance framework.”
The UN has not yet responded to these concerns, but the issue is expected to be a topic of discussion in future sessions. For now, environmental advocates continue to push for greater awareness and action on the intersection of AI and biodiversity.
