Earl Martin Phalen, a former U.S. Senate exploratory candidate and founder of one of the largest charter school systems in North America, has released his first children's book, "Aim High Dream Big." The book, which has already sold out on Amazon since its release, aims to inspire children to overcome obstacles and recognize their inner greatness.
Phalen's personal story is one of resilience. Spending only 29 minutes in his mother's arms before entering the foster care system, he faced a childhood marked by anxiety and self-doubt. Adopted into a large Irish Catholic family in Norwood, Massachusetts, he often felt like an outsider. Despite these challenges, he graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School, and went on to create programs serving at-risk youth.
His initiatives include a charter school network serving 10,000 children across 23 schools, $100 million in scholarships through KC Scholars, and job creation for low-income families via Great Jobs KC and Skilled US. He also helped 50,000 children through Summer Advantage USA. His work earned recognition from First Ladies Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, and a Presidential Service Award from Bill Clinton.
In 2024, Phalen was a U.S. Senate exploratory candidate in Massachusetts. "I was overwhelmed by the support from across the nation, but felt called to return to my 10,000 children," he said. His decision to focus on education led to the creation of "Aim High Dream Big," a picture book with 21 illustrations showing children how to overcome any obstacle.
Phalen explained, "I wrote this for kids who are still figuring themselves out, who may feel unsure of where they fit or what they're capable of. My hope is that my story reminds children that no matter what challenge they face, that greatness is already within them." Dr. Mousson Berrouet, a family physician in Maryland, called the book "an inspiring story for schools, families, and communities that champion the greatness within their children."
The book's message is particularly relevant given the statistics Phalen faced: 70% of his African American peers in foster care end up in jail. By sharing his journey from a 29-minute-old infant in the system to a Harvard-educated leader, Phalen demonstrates that early trauma does not define a person's future. His story underscores the importance of resilience and self-belief, offering a roadmap for children who may feel marginalized or uncertain.
