Undergraduate students across the United States who aspire to become physicians now have an additional source of support. The Dr. Wael Sakr Scholarship for Medical Students is accepting applications from students on a pre-med track or otherwise pursuing a path toward becoming an MD or DO. The one-time award of $1,000 is designed to help a selected student manage educational expenses while continuing toward a medical career.
The scholarship reflects the professional values of Dr. Wael Sakr, whose career spans more than four decades in pathology, medical education, and cancer research. By establishing this initiative, Dr. Sakr seeks to recognize undergraduates who demonstrate the motivation, preparation, and sense of purpose needed to pursue medicine. The award is not restricted to a particular city or state, making it available to promising students wherever they study in the United States.
Eligibility requirements include current enrollment at an accredited college or university, good academic standing, and a genuine interest and commitment to the medical field. Applicants must submit a complete application, including a required essay, by the April 15, 2027 deadline. The essay, 500–750 words in length, asks applicants to respond to the following question: “Dr. Wael Sakr has spent his career advancing medicine through research, mentorship, and a commitment to addressing healthcare disparities. What draws you to a career in medicine, and how do you hope to make a meaningful impact as a future physician?” Applicants are encouraged to provide authentic responses that reflect specific experiences, challenges, or moments that have influenced their decision to pursue medicine.
Applications can be submitted by email and should include the completed essay along with the applicant’s full name, school, expected graduation date, and contact information. Submissions should be sent to apply@drwaelsakrscholarship.com by the deadline. The winner is scheduled to be announced on May 15, 2027, with notification provided directly by email.
Dr. Wael Sakr brings substantial experience to the scholarship initiative. After completing his medical training at the University of Damascus in Syria, he pursued postgraduate education in the United States, including an Anatomic Pathology residency and a Surgical Pathology fellowship. He joined Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990 and later served as Chairman of its Department of Pathology from 2008 to 2022. In 2022, Dr. Sakr became Dean of the Wayne State University School of Medicine. His research career includes extensive work in prostate cancer, particularly the study of racial disparities affecting disease incidence, progression, and outcomes among African American men. He has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has supported advances in pathology, cancer research, and medical education through research, teaching, mentorship, and institutional leadership.
The scholarship carries significance beyond its financial value. It encourages students to articulate their reasons for pursuing medicine and their aspirations for future service, highlighting the importance of thoughtful, academically committed future physicians. By investing in undergraduates who show dedication to healthcare, the initiative aims to foster a new generation of doctors who will address disparities and improve patient care.
