The American Heart Association has announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, is the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, takes over from Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016. The appointment, effective with today's issue, signals a continued commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science.
Maron, who is senior associate dean for precision medicine and director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, brings a vision to reinvigorate the journal. New features include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician's Corner for real-world clinical practice, and a Patient's Corner for the public. These additions aim to make content more engaging and accessible. The journal will also introduce graphic abstracts, video commentaries, and improved manuscript submission processes with accelerated review timelines.
Maron's appointment underscores the Association's dedication to advancing transformative science. Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Scientific Publishing Committee, stated that Maron's vision and scientific breadth position Circulation for optimal success. Maron expressed honor in leading the journal, emphasizing a mission to fast-track information with additional transparency.
Joining Maron is a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific sections, such as Fundamental Sciences by Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, and AI for Process and Science by Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. The team also includes 27 associate and guest editors.
Maron's background includes a medical degree from Brown University, training at Harvard Medical School, and over 260 scientific publications. He has discovered novel mechanisms of vascular fibrosis and led projects using AI to automate clinical diagnosis. His editorial experience includes roles with multiple top-tier journals, and he holds six patents. The American Heart Association's journals, including Circulation, are editorially independent to support open dialogue.
