B2i Digital, Inc. has announced that Lakewood-Amedex Biotherapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: LABT) is now a Featured Company on its platform. This designation brings attention to the clinical-stage biotechnology firm's novel Bisphosphocin class of antimicrobials, which are designed to address the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The campaign will focus on the company's lead candidate, Nu-3, a topical gel being prepared for a Phase 2a trial in infected diabetic foot ulcers (iDFU), and the unique science behind the Bisphosphocin class.
The significance of this development lies in the urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies. As David Shapiro, CEO of B2i Digital, noted, antimicrobial resistance is limiting the effectiveness of existing drugs, and many new compounds are just variations on old mechanisms. Lakewood-Amedex's Bisphosphocins work by physically disrupting bacterial cell membranes, a mechanism that may be harder for bacteria to resist. In laboratory studies, Nu-3 has shown a high barrier to resistance, which is promising for treating infections caused by resistant pathogens like MRSA.
The Phase 2a trial is a critical milestone for Lakewood-Amedex. The study will evaluate the safety and efficacy of Nu-3 gel at three concentrations (2%, 5%, and 10%) in patients with infected diabetic foot ulcers. This condition is a major health concern, with the World Health Organization reporting 830 million people living with diabetes, about a third of whom will develop a foot ulcer, and a significant portion of those infections involving resistant bacteria. The trial is intended to support advancement into a larger Phase 2b study and is chaired by David G. Armstrong, DPM, M.D., Ph.D., a distinguished professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, who also serves as a Scientific Advisor for the program.
Preclinical data supporting the trial were reported in July, showing that Nu-3 was well tolerated in an FDA-required safety study at doses substantially higher than those planned for Phase 2a, with very low systemic exposure and no inhibition of wound healing. This safety profile is crucial for a topical treatment intended for chronic wounds.
Lakewood-Amedex's intellectual property portfolio includes 72 issued patents and 29 pending applications, covering composition of matter for the Bisphosphocin class, formulations of Nu-3, and process patents. The company began trading on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the symbol LABT following a direct listing in April 2026. The partnership with B2i Digital is expected to introduce the company and its science to a wider audience of retail and institutional investors, as part of B2i Digital's network that includes 800+ news outlets and a large capital markets contact list.
The implications of this announcement are twofold. For investors, it highlights an early-stage company with a promising approach to a pressing medical problem. For the healthcare community, it underscores the progress of a potential new class of antimicrobials that could help address the global challenge of antibiotic resistance. As Lakewood-Amedex moves forward with its Phase 2a trial, the results will be closely watched for their potential to impact the treatment of infected diabetic foot ulcers and beyond.
